‘Mickey Mouse’ at Wapping Wharf, 1985

Bringing back an old feature (‘Throwback Thursday’) to showcase these great photos by Paul Stanford from 31st May 1985 when a series of special trains were run down the harbour branch (in those days still in use for coal trains).
These ‘Bristol Harbour Specials’ were sponsored by Imperial Tobacco and featured Ivatt 2MT Mogul (this type was nicknamed ‘Mickey Mouse’ by enthusiasts) No. 46443 and three chocolate and cream Mk1 coaches.
Coaches of this length were unusual on the branch. Paul remembers that At Ashton Junction, the guard locked the interconnecting doors between the coaches as the curves were so sharp, passengers would not be able to move safely between carriages.
“Colin Forse was the driver that day. On the way back, a sort of unofficial Blue Riband was playing out amongst train crew, to see if coming up from Wapping on the final leg Parson Street Junction to Bristol Temple Meads, could the little loco hit 50mph. It managed it on the run I did.”
Thanks to Paul for the photos!
In the first photo the train is standing roughly where the long siding in the yard is now.

Special trains were also run from Temple Meads up the Portishead Branch. Paul caught the 2MT at work on 2nd June 1985, then later at Pylle Hill in July.

The very last Portishead special was on 29th September and the Ivatt is pictured with steam to spare. On the final day the train was strengthened to 8 coaches such were the number of tickets sold.

Brake Van Rides with Pannier 1369 – 1 day only!

If you’d like the chance to ride behind GWR Pannier Tank No. 1369 on the Bristol Harbour Railway, there will be a one-time chance to do so.
To celebrate RAIL200, on Friday 14th March 2025, 1369 will be running short trips with the newly-outshopped Toad Brake Van up to Vauxhall Bridge and back on the branch. There may be the opportunity to dismount at Vauxhall Bridge and take photos.
Places are limited to 10 people per trip and the price is £10 per person for 1 round trip (cash or card, payable on the day).
Spaces are on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day and the first trip will be at 11am. There will be approximately 4 trips on the day (depending on demand and staffing).
1369 will be returning to the South Devon Railway soon so this may be the only chance to travel behind it and a rare opportunity to ride on the New Cut Branch.
Please note that as the Toad is the only passenger vehicle on this service, it will be difficult to provide wheelchair access due to the width of the doors.

A Trio of Pecketts

This fantastic shot was taken by Flickr User Captain Tower, who has given permission for its use here.

It shows all three Pecketts in action (Well, nearly – Henbury was on static display) at the recent 30742 charters event.

Photos from Xmas Steam-Up!

The Xmas steam up event was a success, with all tickets selling out. Rich Skuse and Zoe Robinson were among the lucky people to try their hand at driving ‘Portbury’ and the Steam Crane.

Rich has kindly allowed these photos to be reproduced here!
